Tell investors to drop ties with dirty power plants!

Dear Mr. Conklin,

I am writing to you to share important information about Invenergy and its planned fossil fuel project in Pennsylvania. First proposed in 2016, Invenergy wants to build a 639 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Allegheny County in western Pennsylvania. Invenergy’s website and press releases claim the company is an innovator building a sustainable world. 

Why, then, does Invenergy want to build a methane gas power plant that will only prolong gas development Invenergy calls itself one of the “largest and most well-respected renewable energy developers” - a leader in wind and solar energy. But Invenergy only invests in dirty energy projects in Pennsylvania. Invenergy’s first plant in northeast Pennsylvania was built amid intensely contentious public opposition. The company’s new plant in Allegheny County is facing similar opposition from the community. Allegheny County has some of the worst air quality in the state and its location means that air pollution would also travel to nearby marginalized communities. 

Where is Invenergy’s investment in renewable energy in Pennsylvania? Blackstone has announced it will no longer invest in oil and gas production. While that is commendable, this commitment must also extend to gas-fired power plants, which create more demand for gas production. Despite Invenergy’s claims, there is nothing innovative about methane gas. It is a highly potent greenhouse gas and gas plants emit various harmful air pollutants, in addition to greenhouse gasses that drive climate change. Pennsylvania needs investment in truly renewable energy that does not sacrifice the health of the local community. 

For all of these reasons, Blackstone should ask Invenergy to halt its plans to build a fossil fuel plant in Elizabeth Township and instead propose a clean, renewable energy project. Thank you for your consideration.
