Dear Friend,

Clean Air Council staff have been working to connect with people in East Palestine, Ohio impacted by the horrific derailment of Norfolk Southern’s trains carrying hazardous petrochemicals, including those used to make plastics. This incident is another example of how petrochemical development continues to harm our communities. Residents are still experiencing chemical odors inside their homes as well as health impacts including respiratory issues, headaches, and rashes. Right now, our top priority is to provide immediate, material support to as many affected people as possible. Council staff are in direct contact with residents and are working alongside River Valley Organizing to identify and meet needs.

Clean Air Council has committed $5,000 for high-quality indoor air purifiers and another $750 for cleaning supplies, water, and personal protective equipment (PPE) that residents have requested. Available air purifiers that meet the needs of the situation cost over $550 a piece. Proper respirators cost $30 a piece or more, not including replacement cartridges.

Clean Air Council staff are currently organizing in their communities to gather supplies. We are sending a Direct Relief team to East Palestine on Wednesday February 22nd to distribute supplies and help residents clean inside their homes.

Will you help us support impacted residents by donating today so we can provide residents equipment to better protect them in the wake of the train derailment?

Sincerely,

Joseph Otis Minott, Esq.
Executive Director and Chief Counsel
