Tell your representatives, protect our communities and oppose Encina plastic waste project!
Encina, a Texas-based company, is proposing to build a $1.1 billion “advanced recycling” facility in Point Township, Northumberland County, PA. In reality, this facility would be a plastic waste processing facility. Plastic waste would be shipped to the facility to be sorted and washed. Then, using a process called pyrolysis, Encina would use fracked gas to heat the plastic to break it down to its component chemicals and then ship them to other facilities to make more plastic.
While Encina touts the process as a clean solution to the issue of plastic waste, the reality is that “advanced recycling” is another attempt by the fossil fuel and plastics industries to stay relevant despite a changing market towards environmentally responsible ways to produce energy and products. The chemicals produced at the facility would be a health risk as benzene is known to cause cancer, and exposure to toluene, xylene, and propylene can cause damage to the liver and kidneys, birth defects, or issues with the respiratory and nervous systems.
The facility would also draw 2.9 million gallons of water from the Susquehanna River each day for washing plastics, and then be pumped back into the river, threatening to pollute a vital source of drinking water with microplastics.
Please contact your local state representative and voice your concerns about the Encina plant! We are urging our elected officials to oppose the Encina plant. Thank you for your engagement.
