Dear Friend, Impacted residents must comment today to demand further investigation into how contamination beneath the former Philadelphia refinery is harming public health and the Schuylkill River. Energy Transfer L.P. owns a 12.4 acre former tanker fueling facility at 26 Frontage Rd. within the footprint of the former Philadelphia refinery, known as the Belmont Terminal. Energy Transfer is submitting a remediation-related report to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the Belmont Terminal’s significant soil and groundwater contamination. The property is not involved in HRP Group’s current redevelopment of the former refinery, now referred to as the Bellwether District. Clean Air Council is concerned about how carcinogenic contaminants like benzene, known to be present at the Belmont Terminal, will impact public health and the Schuylkill River. Harmful contaminants are already entering the sewers beneath the site. More rain and bigger storms resulting from climate change will only result in an increase in contaminants transported to sewer systems beneath the site, the Schuylkill River and neighboring properties. Click here to tell Energy Transfer to fully evaluate how contaminants from the Belmont Terminal could be transported in our air and water. Comments are due today, Friday, July 12th. Sincerely, Russell Zerbo, rzerbo@cleanair.org, 215-567-4004 x130 | |
