Hi friend, On the first-ever Earth Day in 1970, 20 million people took to the streets to advocate for cleaner air and water and stronger protections for the planet. It was a period of optimism where people felt that by working together we could improve the harm we were doing to the environment. It led to the creation of a number of new environmental laws. That optimism has faded but the fight continues today as climate change intensifies and communities around the world are suffering from more frequent climate-fueled disasters. We can not afford to lose that fight! The latest IPCC United Nations scientific report released April 4 determined that we have less than a decade to keep increased warming under 1.5 degrees. The report concluded that “without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, limiting global warming to 1.5°C is beyond reach.” We know exactly what needs to be done. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately across all sectors and industries, but we’re running out of time to do it. To slow the climate crisis, we have to fight like every day is Earth Day. In fact, on this Earth Day, Pennsylvania officially codified its rule to cut carbon pollution from power plants and participate in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a program that will cut up to 227 million tons of carbon pollution this decade. The Clean Air Council is fighting for meaningful progress like this every single day – and we need your support! The Council has been: - pushing federal, state and local governments to adopt policies to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane emissions
- advocating for government funding for significant investments to make infrastructure more climate resilient
- fighting in court to stop expansion of new gas and petrochemical projects that would release highly potent greenhouse gas pollution for decades
- promoting investments in clean, sustainable transportation
We are asking for your financial support this Earth Day to address the climate crisis here in Pennsylvania. The money you donate will provide critical funds to advance climate solutions and fight natural gas–a fossil fuel– expansion in the region. |
